Fatal Devils Lake crash death of Joann Burt – Obituary
Joann Burt, a 70-year-old resident of Devils Lake, tragically lost her life in a collision on U.S. Highway 2 on Friday morning. The accident occurred around 9:58 a.m. near mile marker 272.8, roughly two miles east of the city.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Burt was driving a 2024 Ford Edge when she attempted to cross the eastbound lanes of Highway 2 to reach a median for a private driveway exit.
At that time, Glen Lucas, 68, from Zavalla, Texas, was operating a 2020 Kenworth truck pulling an empty trailer in the adjacent lane.
Despite Lucas’s attempt to evade the collision by swerving left, he could not avoid hitting Burt’s vehicle at a right angle.
Lucas sustained minor injuries, while Burt was transported to CHI St. Alexius Hospital in Devils Lake, where she later died from her injuries. Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
