At approximately 5:08 a.m. on August 3, 2024, Newark Police were dispatched to Rittenhouse Park, located at 228 West Chestnut Hill Road, following reports of a disturbance. Upon their arrival, they discovered a Ford F-150 pickup truck that had collided with a tree within the park.
Inside the vehicle, officers found Catherine Spanos, 46, from Newark, seated in the backseat. Tragically, she had sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck had fled before the police arrived.
The Newark Police Department’s Traffic Unit took over the investigation. Initial findings suggest that the truck was exiting the park at a high speed when it veered off the gravel road and struck the tree. The driver’s identity has been established, though it has not been publicly released. No charges have been filed as the investigation by the Traffic Unit continues.
