A week after a devastating shooting disrupted a lively community barbecue, leaving five injured and two dead, details about the incident remain scarce.
Authorities have yet to release any information about the suspects involved. It is unclear how many individuals they are searching for, though it is believed that more than one person was responsible.
There is also no information on whether the shooters were part of the gathering at Maplewood Park or if they came from outside. The motives behind the violence are still unknown.
In a press briefing held on Monday afternoon, Deputy Chief Keith Stith emphasized that the shooting is a “top priority” for the Rochester Police Department, with investigators pursuing “promising” leads provided by witnesses.
“Maplewood Park is our park,” Stith remarked.
On July 28, over 100 people had assembled at the park to enjoy the summer weather and its extensive collection of roses, including infants, children, teenagers, and grandparents.
The event featured games and food until around 6:20 p.m., when a barrage of gunfire erupted for a prolonged minute, causing chaos as the crowd scattered.
Seven individuals were struck by bullets, and many rushed to assist the injured. Tragically, two women, Tyasia Manning, 25, and Phylicia Council, 34, both Rochester residents and friends, lost their lives.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Mayor Malik Evans reported that numerous community members have been in contact with the mayor’s office and the Rochester Police Department, providing photos, videos, and other information related to the incident.
