On Monday, tragedy struck in Columbia when a tractor-trailer veered across the median and collided with a U-Haul, resulting in the deaths of two women from different states.
The Columbia Police Department has identified the victims as Cindy Helms, 54, from Rockwood, Tennessee, who was driving the U-Haul, and Melvina Colin, 84, from Croomfield, Colorado, who was a passenger in the truck.
The accident involved a tractor-trailer operated by Walter Montego, 26, from South Gate, California.
According to police reports, Montego’s vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic following a previous collision and crashed into the U-Haul head-on.
Following the impact, a fire erupted, complicating the scene. The crash led to the closure of both eastbound and part of westbound I-70 for several hours on Monday.
Helms was transported to a hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries, while Colin was pronounced dead at the scene. Montego sustained moderate injuries and was taken to the hospital.
Authorities have not yet released specifics on the cause of the crash, with the investigation still underway. Footage of the incident has been shared with ABC 17 News and is circulating on social media.
