Fatal Langley shooting death of 41-year-old Dillan Unger – Obituary
A 41-year-old man, Dillan Unger, has been confirmed as the victim in a fatal shooting in Langley that also left another person injured early Friday, August 2nd. Cpl. Chase Smith, a spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), stated that Unger lost his life in what appears to have been a targeted and isolated attack.
Police responded to the incident at a property on the 7000 block of 202B Street around 12:46 a.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered two men with gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to the hospital, but Unger succumbed to his injuries. The second individual has since been released from medical care.
The IHIT is revealing Unger’s identity to aid in progressing the investigation. Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who possesses dashcam footage from the area of 202B Street between 68 Avenue and 72 Avenue between 10 p.m. on August 1st and 3 a.m. on August 2nd to contact them.
The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Langley RCMP, the BC Coroners Service, and the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS).
Unger was a longtime resident of Langley, with a criminal history dating back to his youth. In 2004, he and an accomplice, Kyle Llewellyn Barber, were sentenced for a series of violent muggings carried out the previous year. The pair were involved in two robberies where they assaulted victims and stole personal items, using a tree branch in one attack and beer bottles in another. Both were handed 20-month conditional sentences under house arrest, with a stern warning from the judge about potential imprisonment for any violations.
After nearly two decades without any significant legal issues, Unger faced a new charge in May 2023 for theft under $5,000. This case was still pending in court at the time of his death.
Barber, who was involved in the 2003 muggings with Unger, was murdered in 2009 by gangster Albert Jackman. Jackman, believing Barber had stolen from a cannabis operation, broke into Barber’s home with an accomplice and killed him using a pair of scissors. Jackman received a life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years, while his accomplice was convicted of manslaughter.
