Hershel Charles Dutton, a 68-year-old resident of Martins Ferry, was identified as the victim in a tragic single-vehicle accident in Wheeling on Tuesday night.
Dutton was driving a minivan that veered off an embankment and plunged into a creek near the intersection of W.Va. 88 and Warden Run Road.
He was transported to Wheeling Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. No other passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The Wheeling Police Department’s crash reconstruction unit is still investigating the incident. The road was closed for several hours, reopening around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

The driver of a minivan was killed in a crash near the intersection of W.Va. 88 and Warden Run Road in Wheeling on Tuesday night. According to Philip Stahl, a spokesman for the Wheeling Police Department, the accident occurred at 7:13 p.m.
The minivan, traveling south on W.Va. 88, went off the road and down an embankment, ending up in a stream. The driver was taken to WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The crash remains under investigation, and W.Va. 88 was closed for several hours as authorities responded to the scene.
