Tragically, two teenage girls lost their lives in a devastating collision on Lake Marie in Antioch, Illinois, on Tuesday. The victims were identified as 13-year-old Elle Kim from Long Grove, Illinois, and 16-year-old Sarina Vootkur from Lake Forest, California, as reported by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and CBS News.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Illinois Conservation Police, is currently investigating the incident. According to authorities, Sarina Vootkur was operating the Yamaha jet ski, carrying Elle Kim as a passenger, when they were involved in the crash. They were heading north towards the channel leading to Grass Lake.
At the same time, a 55-year-old man was piloting a Sea Ray Cabin Cruiser westbound in the vicinity. Witnesses reported that the jet ski was moving at a high speed toward the boat, making the collision unavoidable. The impact knocked both girls unconscious and threw them into the water.
Despite wearing life vests, the girls were immediately pulled from the water by the boat’s occupants, who quickly called 911 and provided aid. The Sea Ray operator and another boater assisted in getting the girls to shore. Deputies arrived at the scene shortly after 5:00 p.m. The victims were transported to a local hospital but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries. No other individuals were injured in the accident. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has extended their condolences to the families of the deceased.
Boater Randy Chimola expressed his concern about the dangers of high-speed boating, noting, “It’s not like a road where you put brakes on. I mean, they’re just going, and you have no control. It’s scary, really it is.”
