Weston Derby dies in fatal Des Moines shooting
Fatal Des Moines shooting death of Weston Derby – Obituary
Des Moines Police have identified the officers involved in a recent shooting that led to the death of a suspect and serious injuries to one officer.
On July 30th, Senior Police Officer Jesse Schneider and Police Officer Anthony Lampman responded to a call about a restraining order violation in the 5800 block of SE 35th Circle around 3:30 a.m. They located the suspect’s vehicle, which subsequently led to a brief pursuit. The chase ended when the vehicle veered off the road at the 4300 block of E. Army Post Road. The suspect, Weston Derby, 45, from Bellevue, Nebraska, fled on foot into dense foliage. According to Sgt. Paul Parizek, Derby then confronted the officers while brandishing a gun—first aiming it at himself and then at the officers. Both Schneider and Lampman fired their weapons, striking Derby. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial reports suggested that Officer Schneider was injured by Derby’s gunfire. However, it was later revealed that the injury was caused by a stray bullet from Officer Lampman’s weapon.
Sgt. Parizek noted that while Officer Schneider was initially in critical condition, he has shown significant improvement and was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday to continue his recovery at home.
In accordance with department policy, both officers are on paid administrative leave while the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Division of Criminal Investigation conducts a thorough review of the incident.
