Bryan Barnes, a 60-year-old resident, tragically lost his life on Thursday when a tornado struck his home in Wilson County, leading to its collapse. The severe storm also inflicted extensive damage on multiple homes, a nearby middle school, and a historic 130-year-old church.
According to family members, Barnes perished early Thursday morning when the tornado hit Wilson County, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The tornado was first reported at 2:51 a.m. in Lucama. Reports reveal that at least ten homes were affected, including Barnes’ two-story residence on Lloyd Road, which collapsed under the storm’s force.
Barnes, who had spent most of his life in the area, was remembered by his family as they surveyed the wreckage of his home, struggling to come to terms with the loss. His sister, Pam Berger, noted she had received tornado warnings and had texted Barnes around 3:30 a.m., but did not receive a response.
A WRAL News crew witnessed neighbors searching for Barnes, calling his name in hopes he had escaped the devastation. Sadly, Barnes was found by search and rescue teams in his first-floor bedroom.
Described by his sister as a wonderful person, Barnes was commemorated with an Allman Brothers record found amidst the debris, which she plans to leave for his adult children.
