David Hogbin dies in tragic crocodile attack in far north Queensland
Fatal far north Queensland crocodile attack death of David Hogbin – Obituary
David Hogbin, a Newcastle doctor, met a tragic end when a section of the riverbank collapsed beneath him, sending him into a river inhabited by a crocodile. His final act of bravery, letting go of his wife Jane’s arm while she tried to save him, is being remembered by his family and friends.
According to family friend Alex Ward, who shared details on GoFundMe, Hogbin and his wife were walking along a riverbank path when the ground gave way. Jane, who was not walking alongside David at that moment, heard the splash and rushed to help. As she attempted to pull him to safety, the bank’s steep and slippery conditions caused her to begin slipping into the river as well.
Hogbin’s courageous decision to release Jane’s arm likely spared her from a similar fate. Tragically, he was swiftly taken by the crocodile.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, prompted an intensive search effort. By Monday afternoon, a 4.9-meter crocodile was captured and killed, and human remains were discovered within it. It was a small comfort to the family that Hogbin’s young sons did not witness the horrific attack directly.
