Authorities have identified the individuals involved in the tragic shooting at Arlington Bowie High School on Wednesday. The suspect, 17-year-old Julian Howard, and the victim, 18-year-old Etavion Barnes, both attended the school.
Details about the incident remain under investigation. Police believe that Howard, who is a student at Bowie High, specifically targeted Barnes. The exact motive behind the shooting is still unclear.
Barnes was identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office as the victim. According to Arlington Police Chief Al Jones, Barnes sustained multiple gunshot wounds—approximately five or six—in the vicinity of a portable classroom outside the main building on the school grounds.
Footage circulating on social media depicted a police officer administering CPR to Barnes before he was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In response to this tragedy, Rev. Kristen Warthen of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church is working with the Arlington City Council to arrange a prayer vigil. The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, as announced by UMC Bishop Ruben Saenz Jr. The bishop extended prayers to both the bereaved family and the shooter’s family, expressing concern for all affected by the incident.
The suspect, Julian Howard, was apprehended near the Bowie High campus after fleeing the scene. During questioning, Howard chose not to speak without legal representation. Police indicated that their investigation suggests Howard targeted Barnes, although the specific reasons remain under review.
Howard faces several charges including murder, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of an e-cigarette as a minor. A THC cartridge, which was found on him at the time of his arrest, led to the drug-related charge.
The police have yet to determine the type of firearm used in the shooting and have not recovered the weapon. They are also examining whether Howard might have brought the gun into the school, despite its metal detectors and the presence of a school resource officer.
