Fatal Pueblo shooting death of James Jaramillo – Obituary

On July 30, James Jaramillo, 19, from Pueblo, tragically lost his life following a police standoff. The Pueblo County Coroner’s Office identified Jaramillo on August 7.

The details surrounding how Jaramillo sustained a gunshot wound remain unclear, as neither the Pueblo Police Department nor the coroner’s office have disclosed specifics. The 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is actively investigating the incident.

The confrontation began around 1:16 p.m. when police responded to multiple reports of a man firing an “AR-15 style rifle” near the 2100 block of Aztec Drive, as stated in a news release from the Pueblo Police Department. Officers located the suspect, later identified as Jaramillo, entering a residence on the 2100 block of South Drive. The police cordoned off the area and attempted to make contact with Jaramillo, urging him to come out of the residence.

According to the release, during these efforts, Jaramillo allegedly fired at the officers, prompting at least one officer to return fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the officers or civilians. The Pueblo PD SWAT team, along with crisis negotiators and drone units, was called in to assist, but attempts to communicate with Jaramillo proved unsuccessful.

Eventually, SWAT team members entered the home and discovered Jaramillo, who was pronounced dead by a coroner investigator. No other individuals were found inside the residence. As per protocol, the involved officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
