Tragic Chilliwack Accident Claims Lives of Layna Brown and Son Dominic Dyck – Obituary
Support is flooding in from across the province for the grieving family of Layna Brown and her eight-year-old son, Dominic Dyck, who lost their lives in a tragic accident on the Trans-Canada Highway in Chilliwack on Tuesday.
A GoFundMe campaign organized by Dirrae Young of Kelowna reveals that Layna Brown, 40, and her son Dominic died instantly in the crash. Dominic’s twin brother, Tristan, was critically injured and airlifted to a hospital in Vancouver, where he remains in the ICU.
Layna’s father, a retired paramedic, along with her mother, sister, and partner Cory, are holding out hope for Tristan’s recovery, though they acknowledge it will be a long and challenging journey. Young expressed in the fundraiser that the family is in dire need of support to cover funeral expenses and assist with Tristan’s medical care.
The GoFundMe, initially set with a goal of $25,000, has already surpassed $70,000 as of Thursday morning, less than a day after it was launched, demonstrating the outpouring of community support.
Layna and her family resided in Maple Ridge, where she was known for her dedication as a volunteer with the Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association. The association recognized her invaluable contributions to the hockey community.
In the wake of the accident, Brown’s workplace, Big Feast Bistro, has temporarily closed its doors. A heartfelt social media post from the restaurant shared their grief: “Our hearts are heavy, and we are closed until further notice to allow the team to grieve. We will miss you, Layna!”
The fatal six-vehicle collision on Tuesday led to the closure of Highway 1 for 12 hours. While Layna and Dominic were the only fatalities, Tristan was the sole individual to sustain severe injuries.
Preliminary findings from the BC Highway Patrol suggest that the crash was triggered when one or more vehicles stopped suddenly due to an obstruction on the road. This led to a chain-reaction collision when at least one vehicle failed to stop in time. Authorities do not believe impairment was a factor in the accident, and an investigation is ongoing.
