The tributes paint Kitchen as a courageous and genuine individual with a deep commitment to helping others. He was celebrated for his adventurous spirit and his ability to bring joy and excitement to those around him. Known for his talents as an athlete, musician, singer, comedian, and actor, he was seen as having a natural inclination for first response work.
Tragically, Kitchen suffered a fatal injury from a falling tree while battling an active fire northeast of Jasper. He was airlifted from the scene by STARS air ambulance but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Parks Canada issued a statement underscoring the perilous nature of wildland firefighting and the daily dangers faced by crew members. “We are all grieving for our friend and colleague involved in the Jasper Wildfire Complex. We are deeply appreciative of the personal sacrifices made by first responders to safeguard Canadians and their communities.”
According to the RCMP, Kitchen was stationed at the Rocky Mountain House Fire Base in Calgary. On Thursday night, the Jasper Royal Canadian Legion Branch 31 shared a tribute, stating: “Stand Easy. We shall remember.”
