Sheffield, Alabama – The Sheffield Police Department (SPD) has confirmed the arrest of a suspect following the deadly shooting of 27-year-old Christopher Fuqua early Friday morning. Police Chief Ricky Terry announced that 23-year-old Tawan Southern, a resident of Florence, has been taken into custody and charged with murder in connection to the incident.
Southern was booked into the Colbert County Jail at 5:18 p.m. on Friday and is currently being held without bond. The incident occurred at a nightclub named “The Underground” located on South Columbia Avenue. Fuqua was found with gunshot wounds and was transported to Helen Keller Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A nearby resident, Tori Bailey, who lives just a few feet from the scene, recounted how she was awakened by police officers knocking on her door hours after the shooting. Officers informed her that a neighbor had reported seeing a bloody shoe in her yard. Upon investigation, they found both shoes and a blood-stained sock on her property.
This tragic event marks the third shooting in Sheffield in the last month. Bailey, concerned about the increasing violence in her community, urged for a cessation of violence. She emphasized the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully and discouraged the use of firearms to assert dominance.
Chief Terry added that another individual, also injured in the shooting, was detained for questioning after receiving treatment and being released from Shoals Hospital. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are encouraging anyone with information to contact the Sheffield Police Department at 256-386-5630.
