Eastern Ontario experienced a tragic week for motorcyclists, with three separate crashes resulting in six fatalities since July 31.
In Kingston, a collision between a motorcycle and a vehicle last Wednesday resulted in the deaths of both the motorcycle driver and passenger. On Friday night, two men lost their lives when their motorcycles collided at the Highway 416/417 split in Ottawa. A third incident on Saturday involved a three-motorcycle crash in Faraday, near Bancroft, killing two more individuals.
One of the victims from the Ottawa crash has been identified as 24-year-old Creed Jones, a former goalie for the Gatineau Olympiques. Ottawa OPP constable Michael Fathi noted that witnesses reported the motorcycles were traveling at high speeds, although the exact speed remains under investigation.
Constable Fathi also mentioned the increasing problem of motorcycle street racing along Highway 417. He explained that many riders evade police by not displaying license plates and refusing to stop when pursued, creating dangerous situations for all road users.
Despite these incidents, Fathi emphasized that most motorcyclists are safe, law-abiding riders. He urged all drivers to be vigilant, especially when checking their blind spots, as motorcycles can often be difficult to see.
