Fatal Singamalai forest elephant chase claims life of D Thangaraj – Obituary
A 49-year-old anti-poaching watcher named D Thangaraj tragically lost his life on Friday while attempting to escape an elephant in the Singamalai forest area within the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR).
Thangaraj, a resident of Kallampalayam near Thengumarahada village in the Nilgiris, had been serving as an anti-poaching watcher with the Vilamundi forest range in the STR since 2006.
According to a forest officer, the incident occurred when Thangaraj went into the forest to relieve himself. An elephant unexpectedly wandered into the area and began chasing him.
In his effort to flee, Thangaraj fell, and though his team members managed to rescue him before the elephant could reach him, he passed away en route to Kallampalayam.
The officer suggested that Thangaraj might have suffered a cardiac arrest, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed after a postmortem.
Thangaraj is survived by his wife and a 17-year-old daughter.
