Fatal Downtown Memphis crash claims the lives of Rantavious Johnson and Officer Demetric Johnson – Obituary
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – New information has been revealed about a tragic crash that occurred last week in Downtown Memphis, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including a Memphis Police officer.
On Friday, FOX13 acquired a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) outlining the events that led to the deadly collision. The incident took place around 3 a.m. on August 2, 2024, at the intersection of Danny Thomas Boulevard and Mississippi Boulevard.
The two-vehicle accident claimed the lives of Memphis Police Department Officer Demetric Johnson and 22-year-old civilian Rantavious Johnson. Officer Bobby Fields, who was also involved in the crash, was identified as the driver of the police vehicle.
Authorities previously reported that Rantavious Johnson had been shot at a different location before the crash occurred.
According to the THP report, both Officer Johnson and Fields were in a 2021 Dodge Charger, heading south on Danny Thomas Boulevard. As they attempted to turn right onto Mississippi Boulevard, a Nissan Murano driven by Rantavious Johnson crossed through the intersection from the opposite direction, colliding with the driver’s side of the Charger.
The impact sent both vehicles off the roadway. The THP noted that none of the three individuals involved, including the officers and the driver of the Nissan, were wearing seatbelts at the time.
Following the crash, all three were transported to Regional One Health, where both Officer Demetric Johnson and Rantavious Johnson were pronounced dead.
A Memphis City Councilmember informed FOX13 that Officer Fields remains hospitalized in “very serious condition.”
