The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has identified the suspect involved in a tragic shooting that led to the death of Summit Police Officer Troy Floyd and injured two McComb officers.
The incident occurred during a routine police checkpoint on West Railroad Avenue in Summit, where a passenger in a passing vehicle opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Floyd.
In response to the attack, McComb Police Officers Tyler Harvey and Joey Roberts arrived at the scene and engaged the shooter in a gunfight. The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Usher Leonard, was shot and killed in the exchange. Both Harvey and Roberts sustained injuries but are expected to recover.
Following the incident, Governor Tate Reeves and Hinds County Sheriff paid tribute to the fallen officer. Officer Floyd’s body was escorted by a large procession of law enforcement officers to the Mississippi Crime Lab in Pearl, underscoring the profound impact of the loss on the community.
The town of Summit was placed under lockdown in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. Summit Mayor Percy Robinson, who has served since 2006, expressed his shock and sorrow, noting that even his experiences in Iraq did not prepare him for the devastation of losing an officer in his hometown.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is currently leading the investigation into the incident.
