Baltimore City Police have released body camera footage showing the events leading up to the fatal shooting of 17-year-old William Gardner by three officers on Monday night.
The footage captures an officer pursuing Gardner, who was seen with what appeared to be a gun on his hip. Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated in a press conference that Gardner exhibited “characteristics of an armed person” and fled when officers attempted to approach him.
Two additional officers joined the pursuit in a squad car, repeatedly warning Gardner to “Get on the ground” and “You’re gonna get shot.” However, Gardner continued to run.
As Gardner neared an intersection, he drew a gun from his hip and pointed it at the pursuing officer. At this moment, the officers opened fire, resulting in Gardner’s death.
Officials revealed during a press conference that as many as 21 shots were fired by the officers. All three officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative duties while the shooting is under investigation by the Baltimore Police Department, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Maryland State Police to determine whether the use of force was excessive.
