Fatal Thunder Bay shooting death of Jenna Ostberg – Obituary

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is examining the events leading to the death of 21-year-old Jenna Ostberg in Thunder Bay on December 30. Ostberg, a member of Bearskin Lake First Nation, was found deceased after multiple 911 calls were reportedly made without immediate police response.

According to the SIU, the first call, placed around 2 a.m. ET, did not elicit a police response. A second call was made to cancel the initial request, followed by a third call reporting Ostberg’s death.

Her parents, Melanie Beardy and Vincent Ostberg, have expressed their shock at learning about the SIU investigation through media reports, rather than direct communication.

They are seeking justice for their daughter and hope the investigation will lead to meaningful actions for the protection of women, particularly within Indigenous communities.

Thunder Bay Police Service spokesperson Matthew Vis confirmed that officers discovered Ostberg’s body at a residence on Ray Boulevard and are cooperating with the SIU in the ongoing investigation, though no further details have been provided.

Ostberg is remembered by her family as a talented artist and advocate for women’s rights. She was actively involved in community services, including working at a daycare, the Thunder Bay Boys and Girls Club, and participating in her First Nation’s Choose Life program.

Her family moved from Bearskin Lake First Nation to Thunder Bay to ensure their children could attend high school and further their education.

Described as a strong-willed and courageous individual, Ostberg is mourned for her vibrant personality and advocacy. Her parents wish for her legacy to be remembered with dignity and are calling for changes in how such cases are handled.

The SIU is appealing for any witnesses or those with information, including video or photos, to contact their lead investigator. Thunder Bay and Area Victim Services offers a 24/7 crisis line at 807-684-1051 for those affected by domestic violence.
