Fatal Bedok Reservoir drowning death of Raman Selvam – Obituary
A man’s body, identified as Raman Selvam, was discovered in Bedok Reservoir on Monday morning. This marks the third such incident at the reservoir within the past four months.
Selvam, a 33-year-old Indian construction worker, was reported missing after witnesses saw him walk into the water and vanish on Saturday afternoon. Despite efforts by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) over the weekend and throughout Monday, Selvam’s body was only located on Monday morning.
The SCDF received a report of the floating body at 8:46 a.m., and emergency responders, including a fire engine and an ambulance, were promptly dispatched. Selvam was declared dead at 9:22 a.m.
An eyewitness had attempted to rescue Selvam by shouting and throwing a life-buoy, but he disappeared about 20 to 30 meters from shore. Police and SCDF officers searched extensively, sealing off a large area and deploying naval divers, but the search on Sunday was ultimately called off.
Selvam was a construction worker from a nearby site, married with three children. Colleagues reported that he had shown signs of distress in the days leading up to the incident, attributed to personal issues.
