A woman from Topeka, Shyla Goracke, who had been taken into custody following the death of her 9-year-old son, has also passed away, as reported by the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office.
On June 20, Goracke, aged 29, was both detained and hospitalized after deputies responded to her residence on SW Worwick Town Road. They found her son, Zerick I. Ozuna, deceased with injuries to his neck and chest.
The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office announced Goracke’s death on Monday, but did not release additional information.
Zerick I. Ozuna, the young boy identified in the case, was a student at Farley Elementary School in Topeka, part of the Auburn-Washburn United School District 437. School officials described Ozuna as a kind and inquisitive child who loved animals and enjoyed playing Uno. His third-grade teacher, Bobbi Hamman, praised Ozuna as a talented writer and a cherished friend.
The school district staff highlighted that Ozuna held a special place in the hearts of many within the school community.
Ozuna was also involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Topeka, attending both Montara and Farley locations. The organization fondly remembered him on social media as a boy with a boundless imagination who liked to come up with creative solutions to help others.
Goracke owned Mutt’Staches Mobile Grooming in Topeka, which she closed a day before her son’s death, citing personal reasons.
An autopsy of Ozuna was completed on June 21. Goracke had not faced charges in Shawnee County court before her death, and authorities have not officially classified either death as a homicide.
