The tragic death of Victor Schikker in Mid Canterbury – Obituary
Victor Schikker, a 67-year-old father of three and respected stock agent, passed away following a fall during a curling match at the Staveley Ice & Curling Rink in Mid Canterbury. Schikker, who had been a dedicated employee of PGG Wrightson for nearly five decades, had organized the event himself. He suffered a critical head injury after falling backward and hitting his head on the ice. Despite being airlifted to a hospital, Schikker succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.
A representative from Hato Hone St John confirmed that an ambulance and helicopter were dispatched to the rink shortly before 4 p.m. on Friday. Authorities have stated that Schikker’s death will be referred to the coroner.
The Staveley Hall Society, which oversees the rink, expressed its condolences but declined to comment further out of respect for Schikker’s family. The incident took place during a private curling function.
This marks the second fatality at a Canterbury ice rink within two weeks, following the death of 13-year-old Kymani Hiley-Hetaraka, who sustained a fatal head injury during an ice-skating trip on July 30 at Christchurch’s Alpine Ice Sports Centre. Her family emphasized the importance of safety measures, expressing regret that she was not wearing a helmet at the time.
