On Monday afternoon, a college student, Andrea Rodriguez Avila, was discovered dead from a gunshot wound in her dorm room at Rice University in Houston.
The shooting is believed to be part of a murder-suicide involving her boyfriend, who was also found deceased nearby.
Rice University officials identified the victim as a junior from Maryland. Concerned about her lack of communication, her family requested a welfare check, prompting university police to visit her dorm room after she missed at least one class.
They found her body in her room at Jones College, along with the suspect’s body and a note hinting at a troubled relationship between the two.
Authorities suspect the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. While his identity remains undisclosed, it is believed he may have been from Florida. Investigators think he gained entry to the residence by accompanying Avila, who had access.
Rice University President Reginald DesRoches assured the community that the campus is secure and that support services are available for students. The university has emphasized that there was no forced entry into the dorm.
Jones College, established in 1957 with funds from the Houston Endowment, initially served as a women-only residence before evolving into a coeducational institution.
