JOHNSON CITY, Texas – Blanco County officials are probing the tragic death of Angela Chao, the CEO of Foremost Group, who passed away on Sunday. Emergency services were dispatched to a private ranch after a report of a water rescue, according to a sheriff’s office statement released on Thursday.
The statement indicated that despite efforts by emergency personnel, Chao could not be revived and was pronounced dead after being submerged in water.
Preliminary findings suggest Chao might have drowned after her vehicle entered a body of water on the property, though the precise cause of death is still under investigation. This information was shared by a law enforcement source who asked to remain anonymous due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The statement from the sheriff’s office did not mention a car accident but noted, “our preliminary investigation indicates this was a tragic accident. The investigation continues.”
The location of the incident has not been disclosed, but the Statesman has requested this information under the Texas Public Information Act. Attempts to speak with officials at the Blanco County Sheriff’s Office have been unsuccessful.
Chao, a resident of Austin, was the youngest daughter of Dr. James S.C. Chao, the founder and honorary chairman of Foremost Group, and the sister of Elaine Chao, former Secretary of Transportation. She was also the sister-in-law of Senator Mitch McConnell.
Angela Chao was married to James Breyer, a prominent venture capitalist and CEO of Breyer Capital, based in Austin. Breyer is also a minority owner of the Boston Celtics.
Blanco County, located in the Hill Country and named after the Blanco River, is about 30 miles west of Austin. As of 2022, its population was around 12,400.
In response to Chao’s death, Foremost Group highlighted her dedication to her employees and her impactful leadership in the shipping industry.
“Angela Chao was a remarkable executive and industry leader, and a deeply loved family member. She began learning about the shipping industry from an early age, accompanying her father during ‘Take Your Daughter to Work’ days,” the statement said.
Chao, a Harvard graduate with degrees in both undergraduate studies and an MBA, was also an accomplished author in economics, international trade, and finance. She had served as CEO of Foremost Group since 2018 and was actively involved in numerous organizations, including the American Bureau of Shipping Council and Harvard Business School’s Board of Dean’s Advisors.
Chao was a co-chair of the advisory council for The Asian American Foundation. Her father remarked, “Angela’s name in Chinese symbolizes peace and prosperity. She certainly brought much of both to the world. Her loss is deeply felt by our family and the Asian-American community.”
