Fatal Grand Canyon National Park flash flood death of Chenoa Nickerson – Obituary
The body of 33-year-old Chenoa Nickerson from Gilbert, Arizona, who was swept away by a sudden flash flood in Grand Canyon National Park last week, was discovered on August 25 in the Colorado River, according to officials. Nickerson went missing on August 22 after the flood hit Havasu Canyon, near river mile 157. She was last seen roughly 100 yards above the confluence of Havasu Creek and the Colorado River.
A multi-day search and rescue effort by the National Park Service concluded with Nickerson’s body being found at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. The discovery was made by a rafting group on a commercial river trip at river mile 176. Park rangers were dispatched to retrieve the body, which was then airlifted to the Grand Canyon rim and subsequently transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner in Arizona.
The National Park Service and the Medical Examiner are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further details have not yet been released.
