Fatal Wrexham park drowning of Gail Lloyd – Obituary
In a heart-wrenching incident, Gail Lloyd, 50, drowned while attempting to save her dog from a swollen river in Erddig Park, Wrexham, on December 9. Her husband, Martin Lloyd, who tried to rescue her, was himself pulled to safety by passers-by but could not save his wife.
During an inquest held in Ruthin, it was revealed that Martin Lloyd and his wife were walking their two dogs along the River Clywedog when Gail entered the river to reach their Fox-Red Labrador, Cadwy, which was caught below a weir. Despite Martin’s urgent calls for her to exit the water and his own efforts to wade in, Gail was unable to be reached.
William Cossins, who was participating in a Parkrun event at the park, and other bystanders responded to the situation. They managed to rescue Martin, who was weakened and had a rope attached to his wrist. The rescuers did not attempt to enter the river themselves due to the danger involved. Gail was pulled from the water, and despite receiving CPR from a passer-by, she was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services. The official cause of death was drowning.
Assistant Coroner Kate Robertson concluded that the death was accidental, noting the tragic circumstances of Gail’s death while trying to save her beloved pet.
