The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has confirmed the identity of the man who was killed in a police shooting in Huntsville on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Naimmikal Wayne Sanders, a 38-year-old resident of Decatur. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Huntsville Police Department (HPD), officers were dispatched to a domestic violence call shortly before 10 a.m. Sanders reportedly fired at a woman who was attempting to escape from the scene while an HPD officer was present. In response, the officer fired at Sanders, resulting in his death.
There were no injuries reported among the officers involved. Following the shooting, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation has been tasked with leading the investigation.
HPD officers had arrived at the Reserve at Research Park and Waterstone apartment complex around 9:30 a.m. and were met with gunfire. They successfully evacuated a woman and child from the apartment, while Sanders barricaded himself inside. Both the woman and child were taken to the hospital due to injuries.
Currently, no additional details are available. The findings from the investigation will be forwarded to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office upon completion.
