Authorities have identified Oliver W. Campbell, 70, and Katherine A. Campbell, 65, as the victims of a tragic home explosion in rural Excelsior Springs. The incident, which occurred early Friday morning, was so powerful it was felt and seen from several miles away. The explosion happened just before 5 a.m. on Kimberly Drive.
Responding deputies from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrived to find the residence completely destroyed and engulfed in flames. After several hours of sifting through the debris, emergency crews recovered two bodies.
The house utilized propane for energy, and while the Missouri Division of Fire Safety has confirmed a gas leak was involved, the exact source of the leak remains undetermined due to the extensive damage. Additionally, a dog perished in the blast.
