Fatal downtown Austin shooting death of Shannon Smith – Obituary
In a tragic incident early Monday morning, Shannon Smith, 42, was found fatally injured in an alley on the 500 block of East 6th Street.
Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a call around 1:38 a.m. and discovered Smith on the ground with blood on her shirt. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.
The Austin Police Department is treating Smith’s death as the 41st homicide of the year in the city. Initial investigations revealed that Gregory Watkins, 54, who is wheelchair-bound, was identified as a person of interest.
Watkins reported that Smith had approached him with a knife, demanding money and drugs. He claimed he struck her with a metal rod in self-defense.
The Travis County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and has decided not to file charges at this time. Watkins was interviewed and subsequently released. The investigation is ongoing.
