Three individuals tragically lost their lives in separate road accidents across Malta in a single day. Carmen Buttigieg, a 77-year-old woman from Żebbuġ, was fatally struck by a van in Qormi on Tuesday afternoon.
The motorcyclist who died later that day in a crash in Rabat has been identified as Cristi Alejandra Robles Valderrama, originally from Bogota, Colombia.
In a third incident, 40-year-old Balu Ganesh Balakrisha from India was killed in a head-on collision, also in Żebbuġ.
Robles, 33, who resided in Mtarfa, was involved in a high-speed motorcycle crash at around 11 p.m. on Triq tat-Tabija in Rabat, near the Għeriexem promenade.
She was riding as a passenger when the motorcycle collided with an electricity pole. The driver, also from Colombia, remains in critical condition. Witnesses reported seeing the two drinking alcohol together before the crash.
The string of fatalities has prompted an investigation by magistrates. So far this year, eight people have died on Malta’s roads, matching the death toll from the same period last year.
Dr. Michael Spiteri, an emergency physician who responded to the Rabat accident, urged the public to prioritize safety.
“Three lives lost, many families shattered, some injured requiring months of recovery,” he said. “We must be more cautious and change habits that could lead to tragic consequences.”
