Fatal San Diego crash death of Officer Austin Machitar – Obituary
San Diego Police Officer Austin Machitar, aged 30, was tragically killed in a high-speed pursuit crash on Monday, with Officer Zachary Martinez sustaining critical injuries.
The incident occurred when the suspect involved in the chase collided with Machitar’s cruiser.
Machitar, who had been serving with the San Diego Police Department for nearly six years, was a San Diego native. He is survived by his parents and sister.
Police Chief Scott Wahl expressed profound sympathy for Machitar’s family and highlighted his exceptional qualities, calling him “the kind of guy you wanted on your team.”
Officer Zachary Martinez, 27, a Navy reservist from Texas, had been with the department for about two years.
He had previously been trained by Machitar and had worked closely with him. Martinez remains in critical condition with severe injuries, but Chief Wahl is hopeful for his recovery.
In response to the tragedy, the San Diego Police Officers Association has launched a fundraising campaign to support both officers’ families.
Jared Wilson, the association’s president, emphasized the community’s support for their officers and the importance of assisting their families during this challenging time.
