Fatal Clairemont Mesa crash death of Edgar Giovanny Oviedo – Obituary
On Monday night, a tragic collision in Clairemont Mesa resulted in the death of 16-year-old Edgar Giovanny Oviedo, identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. The crash also claimed the life of San Diego Police Officer Austin Machitar and left another officer critically injured.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on August 26, when Oviedo was driving a BMW sedan east on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. At the intersection with Doliva Drive, his vehicle collided with a San Diego Police Department patrol car that was heading north.
Paramedics arrived swiftly and attempted life-saving measures while transporting Oviedo to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Officer Machitar, a 30-year-old father of four, died at the scene, and his colleague, 27-year-old Officer Zach Martinez, sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized.
San Diego Police officials noted that the BMW had initially fled from officers who attempted to stop the driver for speeding.
