Edgar Giovanny Oviedo dies in fatal San Diego car crash
**Fatal San Diego car crash death of Edgar Giovanny Oviedo – Obituary**
Edgar Giovanny Oviedo, a 16-year-old from San Diego, has been identified as the driver involved in a tragic crash on Monday night that resulted in his death, as well as the death of a San Diego police officer and critical injuries to another officer.
The incident took place at approximately 11:30 p.m. near 5200 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Oviedo’s identity. The crash occurred after a police pursuit was called off when a vehicle failed to stop while speeding down Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. The BMW sedan Oviedo was driving collided with a northbound San Diego Police Department patrol car at the intersection of Clairemont Mesa Blvd. and Doliva Drive.
Officer Austin Machitar, 30, of San Diego, was driving the patrol car with his partner, 27-year-old Zachary Martinez from Lubbock, Texas. Tragically, Machitar was pronounced dead at the scene, while Martinez was left with critical injuries. Oviedo succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl spoke at a press conference on Tuesday, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Officer Machitar. Wahl described him as a highly valued member of the team, known for his athleticism, competitive spirit, and dedication to training, serving as one of the department’s field training officers.
Chief Wahl also provided an update on Officer Martinez’s condition, stating that he has a long and challenging recovery ahead due to the extensive nature of his injuries. Despite the severity, Wahl expressed optimism about Martinez’s potential recovery.
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash.
