Fatal San Diego crash death of Edgar Giovanny Oviedo – Obituary
Authorities have confirmed the identity of the 16-year-old driver who perished in a multi-vehicle collision on Monday night. The accident, which also resulted in the death of a San Diego police officer and critically injured another officer, occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Doliva Drive.
Edgar Giovanny Oviedo of San Diego was operating a BMW sedan eastbound when he collided with the side of a northbound police vehicle, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. The police vehicle was responding to an earlier high-speed chase, which had been terminated by a supervisor due to safety concerns. Despite this, Oviedo’s car struck the police vehicle.
Officer Austin Machitar, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene. Machitar, who had been with the San Diego Police Department since March 2019, was assigned to the Northern Division. His patrol partner, Officer Zachary Martinez, 27, sustained critical injuries and is in stable condition at a local hospital.
The crash also involved at least two civilian vehicles, though no other injuries were reported. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
