Fatal San Diego crash claims life of 16-year-old Edgar Oviedo – Obituary
A 16-year-old driver, Edgar Oviedo, has been identified as the victim in a tragic collision that occurred on Monday night in San Diego. The accident also claimed the life of a San Diego police officer and left another seriously injured.
Oviedo was driving a BMW sedan east on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard when his vehicle collided with a northbound San Diego Police Department patrol car at the intersection of Doliva Drive. Emergency responders attempted to save Oviedo’s life as they rushed him to Sharp Memorial Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The officer driving the patrol car, identified as 30-year-old Austin Machitar, died at the scene. Machitar, a San Diego native and five-and-a-half-year veteran of the police force, was described by Police Chief Scott Wahl as “the kind of guy you wanted on your team.” He is survived by his parents and sister.
The second officer involved in the crash, 27-year-old Zachary Martinez, sustained severe injuries and remains in critical condition. Martinez, who had served as a San Diego police officer for a year and a half, was a former Navy reservist from Texas. Chief Wahl expressed optimism about Martinez’s recovery but noted that he faces a long and difficult journey ahead.
The San Diego Police Department is now focused on supporting the families of both officers as they navigate this difficult time.
