An American archaeologist, Karla Dana, tragically drowned after the replica Viking ship she was aboard capsized while traveling from the Faroe Islands to Norway. The incident occurred during the “Legendary Viking Voyage,” which was organized by Sail2North expeditions. Dana, 29, was among six participants on the Naddoddur, a replica Viking vessel.
On Tuesday evening, the Norwegian Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) managed to rescue the remaining five passengers who had been on the ship. Despite their efforts, the rescue team found the boat had overturned, with the survivors found on a life raft. They were airlifted to safety around 8:50 p.m. local time.
The distress call was first received at approximately 5:45 p.m., but there was a delay in response. A subsequent call around 8 p.m. prompted local civilian boats to the scene. Emergency responders continued their search through the night, recovering Dana’s body the next morning when weather conditions improved.
Norwegian police confirmed that among the survivors were one Faroese and four Swiss nationals. The US State Department has also verified the death of the American citizen. Sail2North had previously described Dana as a spirited and adventurous individual, integral to their exploration project.
