Liam Newman, a 25-year-old man, tragically died in a skydiving accident in southwest Queensland on Tuesday morning. Emergency responders pronounced Newman dead at 8:10 a.m. in Tarawera, north of Goondiwindi, after being called to the scene of a malfunctioning skydive.
Newman, who worked at iFLY Indoor Skydiving in Brisbane, was widely remembered and mourned by colleagues and friends. His workplace expressed deep sorrow on Facebook, describing him as a beloved team member and announcing the temporary closure of their Brisbane facility out of respect.
His mother appreciated iFLY Brisbane’s support and noted that her son had been passionate about his job. Former co-workers and those he coached praised Newman’s infectious enthusiasm and dedication to skydiving. They recalled his excitement about pursuing a full-time career in the sport.
The Australian Parachute Federation (APF) and Queensland Police’s Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the accident. Newman was part of a group jump with four other divers; his parachute deployed correctly, but he experienced a severe landing, while the other divers landed safely. Reports indicate the incident occurred at Funny Farm, a skydiving venue, where Newman had successfully completed over 600 jumps in two years.
A GoFundMe campaign organized by Newman’s best friend has raised over $16,000 to cover funeral expenses. The fundraiser described Newman as someone who “dared to push the limits” and expressed deep personal loss.
