Authorities have confirmed the identity of the University of Delaware student tragically killed by a motorcycle on the first day of classes. The victim, 18-year-old Noelia Gomez from Clark, New Jersey, was struck by the motorcycle around 11:50 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Newark police.
The incident occurred when a motorcyclist, who was being pursued by police, ignored an attempted traffic stop and sped down Main Street, ultimately hitting Gomez while she was in a crosswalk. The collision caused the rider to be thrown from the motorcycle, which continued moving and collided with four additional pedestrians on the sidewalk.
Gomez was a first-year student who had just started her classes that day. University officials expressed their profound sorrow, emphasizing the deep impact of her loss on the university community. President Dennis Assanis and Vice President José-Luis Riera conveyed their condolences, urging the community to support one another during this difficult time.
