Zongchar Moua, a 34-year-old man, tragically drowned while rafting on the American River near Clay Banks in Rancho Cordova. On Saturday, June 15, 2024, he was swept away by strong currents and was not wearing a life jacket at the time. Despite extensive search efforts involving helicopters and divers using sonar, Moua’s body was found on Sunday morning.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office confirmed Moua’s death and noted that the cause is undetermined pending further autopsy results. Authorities urge individuals to wear life jackets when engaging in water activities, especially with the higher and faster river levels due to a significant Sierra snowpack. Life jackets are available at river access points and fire departments throughout the region.
