**Fatal Shaver Lake drowning death of Alejandro Araujo – Obituary
A tragic incident occurred at Shaver Lake, California, where a 16-year-old boy, identified as Alejandro Araujo, drowned after jumping off a pontoon boat. The boy, a junior at Orosi High School, was reported missing around 12:40 p.m. on Sunday.
Authorities said Araujo had donned a U.S. Coast Guard Type Two life jacket, but he did not fasten it properly, causing it to slip off when he entered the 65-degree water. Despite efforts by someone from his group to locate him, and subsequent searches by patrolling boating deputies, Araujo’s body was eventually found by the sheriff’s dive team at 1:50 p.m., 15 feet beneath the lake’s surface.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with deputies interviewing witnesses for further details. Orosi High School has confirmed Araujo’s death and is supporting students through this difficult time.
In light of the tragedy, the sheriff’s office released a water safety video featuring Deputy Erica Covarrubias. She emphasized the importance of wearing properly fitting life jackets, avoiding swimming if not experienced, and supervising children closely. Covarrubias also highlighted the risks of cold water temperatures and potential debris, advising swimmers to be cautious of sudden depth changes and to avoid alcohol while swimming.
Comments on social media noted that the cold water could have caused Araujo to go into shock, with some recalling advice against jumping into cold water.
