Two months following a tragic shooting at a downtown Columbus nightclub that claimed the lives of Ceilin Smith and Desmond Taylor, the suspect has been apprehended. On Thursday, U.S. Marshals arrested 26-year-old Jaquez Hoover in Columbus.
Family and friends of the victims have expressed relief at the arrest. Karhonda, Smith’s girlfriend, noted her anxiety about the suspect’s capture had been alleviated by the news. “Every morning, I would wake up and check the news like, did they catch him?” she said.
Latisa Shaver, a survivor of the shooting and a former security guard at the club, revealed her emotional reaction to Hoover’s arrest. Having been shot six times that night, she survived and considered Smith and Taylor as close as brothers. “I survived for a reason, to tell my story and get justice for my brothers,” Shaver said.
Shaver and Karhonda are committed to attending all of Hoover’s court hearings. “I’m going to look him in his eyes just like he looked me in mine when he shot me,” Shaver declared. The preliminary hearing for Hoover is set for 9 a.m. on Friday.
