SAN JOSE, CA – The tragic collision on Highway 85 in San Jose that claimed the life of 14-year-old Charlie George Olsen has been confirmed by the County of Santa Clara Medical Examiner/Coroner. Charlie, a resident of San Jose, was identified as the victim in this devastating incident.
The crash occurred when a truck traveling in the wrong direction collided with Charlie and his mother, Rebecca Olsen, 47, inside their Tesla Model Y. Rebecca, who was also killed in the crash, was identified earlier this week. The family’s loss has been deeply felt, with emotional tributes pouring in from their community and loved ones.
Cameron Olsen, the bereaved father and husband, expressed his profound grief, stating, “Losing a child is the ultimate nightmare for a parent. The last week has been a whirlwind of emotions, and I know the coming months will be incredibly difficult. It feels unfair, and the pain of wanting my son back is beyond words.” Cameron also acknowledged the support from the community and a heartfelt message from a Summit Tahoma High School student.
Originally from Australia, the Olsen family had been living in San Jose for 12 years, following Cameron’s relocation for a tech job. Charlie, a freshman at Summit Tahoma High School, was known for his exceptional talents and curiosity, having traveled to over 30 countries and learned Arabic by the age of five.
The crash occurred around 3:40 p.m. when Duncan McQuarrie, a 39-year-old from Orlando, Florida, driving the wrong-way truck, collided with the Olsens’ vehicle. McQuarrie sustained serious injuries and is currently hospitalized. It remains unclear whether he will face any charges or if drugs and/or alcohol were involved in the incident.
A dashcam video from a witness driving on the highway captured the truck traveling in the wrong direction, adding to the ongoing investigation into the crash.
