Edgar Giovanny Oviedo, a 16-year-old, was involved in a deadly car crash that claimed both his life and that of a San Diego Police officer earlier this week. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Edgar as the driver of the BMW sedan involved in the collision. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, Edgar did not possess a driver’s license at the time of the accident.
The BMW had been purchased just a day before the incident from an elderly woman in El Cajon. The crash occurred on Monday night when Edgar was driving east on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and collided with a northbound San Diego Police Department patrol vehicle at the intersection with Doliva Drive.
Two of Edgar’s cousins visited the crash site on Thursday afternoon, where a memorial had been set up for him and the police officers involved. His cousin, Michelle Uriostegui, shared that Edgar, affectionately known as “Gio,” was out getting food that night and was always keen on staying connected with his family. She expressed the family’s deep sorrow over the tragic event and extended their condolences to the police officers’ families.
The police officer driving the patrol vehicle, 30-year-old Officer Austin Machitar, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 27-year-old Officer Zach Martinez, suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized. Martinez, a former Navy serviceman stationed in San Diego, grew up in Lubbock, Texas, and worked as an Emergency Medical Technician in Phoenix, Arizona, before joining the San Diego Police Department.
Martinez’s father, Ernest, mentioned that his son is undergoing multiple surgeries. In response to the tragedy, the San Diego Police Officers Association reported that the community has shown overwhelming generosity, with nearly half of the $250,000 fundraising goal already met to support the families of the officers. A GoFundMe account has also been established to assist Edgar’s family.
