**Fatal Bolton drug mix death of Stephen Leyland – Obituary
Stephen Leyland, 47, passed away in January due to a dangerous combination of drugs, an inquest has revealed. The coroner highlighted the risks associated with mixing various substances after reviewing the circumstances surrounding Leyland’s tragic death.
The inquest was informed that Leyland’s system contained a blend of prescribed medications, over-the-counter drugs, and illegal substances, including cannabis and cocaine. He had been using pregabalin and tramadol for back pain, though only the pregabalin was noted to be at therapeutic levels. The cocaine, while at a recreational level, can induce seizures and disrupt heart rhythm.
Leyland, a resident of Lowton, Wigan, was unaware of his ischemic heart disease, which involves the narrowing of the coronary arteries. On the evening of January 6, he left his estranged wife’s home in Aspull, Wigan, possibly after a dispute, wearing only a polo shirt and leaving his coat and wallet behind. His daughter, Abbie Leyland, reported that he had mentioned heading towards Wigan hospital. Despite her search efforts, he was reported missing the next day.
His body was discovered early on January 8 by an HGV driver on Station Road in Horwich, Bolton, after what is believed to have been a three-hour walk. Although attempts at CPR were made, Leyland was pronounced dead at the scene. CCTV footage showed Leyland climbing over a fence and struggling up an embankment near the M61 motorway, eventually resting and not moving further. Detective Inspector Stuart Woodhead suggested that Leyland’s fatigue, exacerbated by the drugs, likely led to his inability to continue moving.
