James Lee Thompson, an 85-year-old resident of Redding, tragically lost his life in a car crash on Interstate 5 on Wednesday. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when Thompson, driving northbound, lost control of his vehicle, crossed both lanes, and collided with a dirt embankment, causing his car to overturn. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed that Thompson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another victim, 20-year-old Matthew Ray Cardilino, also of Redding, was identified as the motorcyclist who died in a crash on Tuesday. Cardilino was riding north on Churn Creek Road near Maraglia Street when a truck suddenly pulled out of a driveway into his path. Unable to stop in time, Cardilino collided with the truck, leading to his death just before 4 p.m., according to Redding police.

In a separate incident, a 64-year-old woman lost her life early Thursday morning when the SUV she was a passenger in veered off Highway 44 east of Airport Road and struck a tree. These tragedies are part of a deadly month on North State roadways, with eight fatalities reported in August. Among these were Kannon Wayne Chaney, 21, of Anderson, who died on August 25 following a suspected DUI crash on Buenaventura Boulevard in Redding. The driver, Christian Bennett, 19, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Earlier in the month, on August 21, a semi-truck passenger died in Siskiyou County after the driver fell asleep, causing the truck to veer off an embankment on Highway 89. On August 15, Leobardo Tapia Sosa, 30, and Hector Miguel Gutierrez Tapia, 25, both from McArthur, perished in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 299 near Bella Vista. Lastly, Robert Braydon Keller, 33, of Anderson, was killed on August 20 in a single-car accident on West Anderson Drive when his vehicle left the road, struck a fence, and flipped over.

This series of fatal accidents highlights a particularly tragic period on local roads, as the community mourns the loss of multiple lives.
