Fatal Scripps Ranch construction accident claims life of 27-year-old Joel Olea Gomez – Obituary
SAN DIEGO – The construction worker who tragically lost his life early Wednesday morning near Scripps Ranch High School has been identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Authorities confirmed Friday that the victim was 27-year-old Joel Olea Gomez, a resident of San Marcos.
Gomez was working with a coworker in a 20-foot-deep trench at Hoyt Park Drive and Scripps Ranch Boulevard, part of a pure water project. The two were assisting another worker in guiding a metal pipe when the trench walls began to give way. While his coworker managed to escape, Gomez was trapped and buried under the collapsing trench, pinned against the wall by dirt.
San Diego Fire-Rescue paramedics responded, but the rescue effort soon became a recovery operation as Gomez was found with fatal injuries, described by the Medical Examiner’s Office as “crush injuries of the torso.”
Dan Eddy, the deputy chief of operations for San Diego Fire-Rescue, reported that the pipe involved was a massive four-foot steel and concrete pipe. An excavator and other heavy machinery were necessary to remove the pipe from Gomez.
The incident is under investigation by the California Occupational Health and Safety Administration (Cal/OSHA).
