In a tragic incident in Kingscliff, a man has been arrested following a home invasion that resulted in the death of Trae Laurie, 29, and severe injuries to 66-year-old Allan Kerr.
Police report that Laurie, along with another individual, forcibly entered Kerr’s home before 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
The two intruders allegedly attacked Kerr with an axe, nearly severing his arm.
According to Detective Inspector Matt Zimmerman from the Tweed/Byron District, Kerr defended himself with a knife, fatally injuring Laurie during the struggle.
The confrontation caused serious harm to Kerr, who was later found by neighbors and taken to Gold Coast University Hospital where he is now in stable condition after surgery.
Laurie was discovered on the front veranda with chest wounds, having been covered with a face mask.
Despite emergency services’ attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Kerr was found semi-conscious in the hallway.
A 26-year-old man has been arrested at a Kingscliff residence and is currently assisting police with their investigation.
Authorities are also searching for a third man believed to have been involved in the incident, as well as a silver Toyota Corolla found nearby.
Detective Inspector Zimmerman noted the limited information available from Kerr and emphasized the need to determine whether Kerr’s response was appropriate to the threat.
The police are seeking public assistance to identify the second suspect, described as a male between 20 and 40 years old. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers.
