Fatal Chula Vista arson fire death of Amanda Buchanan – Obituary
Authorities have identified Amanda Buchanan, 44, as the woman who succumbed to injuries sustained in a suspected arson fire this week.
Buchanan was declared dead on Thursday, five days after the blaze, which is believed to have been set by her former boyfriend, engulfed the 7-Eleven store where she worked in the 800 block of Broadway, Chula Vista.
The fire began early Saturday morning, with patrol officers arriving shortly after 8 a.m. to find the building filled with smoke and Buchanan outside with severe burns. The officers entered the store upon hearing sounds from within and discovered Buchanan immobile.
They rescued her, and paramedics transported her to a trauma center, along with another injured employee whose identity has not been disclosed but is reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities suggest that the fire was deliberately set. Initial investigations indicate that a man used a flammable liquid, possibly gasoline, to ignite the blaze before fleeing.
The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Jose Carlos Villanueva of Chula Vista, was apprehended later that day at a gas station in Redlands, San Bernardino County. Villanueva had previously been in a relationship with Buchanan, though the motive for the attack remains under investigation.
